Redundancy Mismanagement Can Cause Unnecessary Grief for Troubled Businesses

In response, Croner launches new Managing Redundancy pocket book to help companies through this potentially difficult area

London (25 September, 2008) – Employment law experts, Croner, part of Wolters Kluwer UK, has launched a practical new pocket book, Managing Redundancy, to ensure that employers follow the correct procedures and protect themselves from litigation when making employees redundant.

Many companies in the current economic climate will be unable to avoid making redundancies. However, for some it will be the first time they have had to do so and they may not therefore, be aware of the stringent legal and procedural requirements of the redundancy process.

Figures released by the UK Tribunals Service highlight a forty two per cent rise in claims over the last twelve months1. Croner itself has seen a 50 per cent rise in the claims it handles on behalf of employers over the last three months.

To avoid any unnecessary employment tribunals and therefore increased costs for businesses, Croner’s new book offers a breadth of advice in an easy-to-absorb format for busy employers.

From guidance on calculating redundancy payments and providing training to management, right through to assisting employees with finding alternative employment and minimising the negative impact on the workforce as a whole, Croner covers every aspect of redundancy in this publication.

Martin Smith, Executive Director at Croner, says: “Managing redundancy is a without doubt a complex process. This guidance book has been designed to assist managers in working through redundancy.

“Chapters specifically deal with the employer’s duties and responsibilities under statutory and case law and also feature handy summaries of the key legal points that must be followed at the end of each chapter.

“Obviously redundancy involves dismissal and this book explains all the ins and outs of the complex law surrounding this issue. As it covers redundancy from a range of angles, the book is designed to keep managers on the ball, to not only adhere to the law but also to minimise as much as possible the negative impact it can have on the team, such as low staff morale post dismissal.

“It is vital that they manage that process correctly and seek professional advice before making staff redundant and we advise all our clients that they must handle dismissals fairly and legally.”

Managing Redundancy, by Croner, is priced at just £19.95 plus £5.50 ppa. To obtain a copy, call 020 8247 1630, email www.croner.co.uk/manred.
